    Serving as the centre for excellence in the teaching of Thai and foreign languages, development studies and social sciences, there is no better place to gain the necessary expertise in such a broad array of disciplines and languages. The School employs the majority of MFU's foreign lecturers and boasts several collaborations with prestigious international institutions, reflecting the international focus and global vision of MFU.

  • About the School

    The School of Liberal Arts was established pursuant to the Mae Fah Luang University Act, 1998. At its inception in 1999, the School was responsible solely for the creation and provision of general education courses, which it did for 2 years. Since 2001, the School started a gradual expansion of its degree programmes, periodically developing and instituting new programmes in several disciplines and at various educational levels. To fulfil its teaching mission, the School serves the entire body of students in the fields of general education, languages and social sciences.

    Bachelor of Arts Programme in Business Chinese

    (45,500 Baht per semester; 364,000 Baht per programme)

    The primary aim of this programme is to produce graduates capable of using Chinese as a primary medium in business practices, with additional emphasis on business administration skills and English communication abilities, so as to prepare them for occupational or entrepreneurial pursuits.

    Objectives:
    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Have knowledge of both English, Chinese and business management.
    • Apply gained knowledge in the running of business operations.
    • Become an entrepreneur. 
    • Analyse and solve problems with morality and ethics.
    Bachelor of Arts Programme in Chinese Language and Culture

    (39,000 Baht per semester; 312,000 Baht per semester)

    This programme primarily aims to produce graduates who possess Chinese language accuracy and fluency of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills at an international standard. In addition, the programme urges graduates to possess morality, professional ethics and responsibility towards the whole of society.

    Objectives:
    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Possess profound knowledge and abilities in Chinese language.
    • Be keen on the Chinese language and culture, and be able improve themselves continuously.
    • Possess the critical judgment and wisdom to solve problems and also live as a good citizen of the nation.
    • Possess morality, professional ethics and responsibility towards the whole of society.
    Bachelor of Arts Programme in English

    This programme primarily aims to produce graduates well equipped with not only English language proficiency, but also with skills in operating internationally utilised information-technology systems. The programme encourages the ability to think, put ideas into practice and solve problems, whilst maintaining professional ethics, in order to propel the nation towards sustainable development and a more active role in this globalised era.

    Bachelor of Arts Programme in International Development

    The Bachelor of Arts in International Development programme aims to provide knowledge on international relations and socio-economic development for future graduates. Graduates shall be able to apply theories for their future practices and work in both government and private sectors at local and international levels.

    Objectives:
    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Have keen knowledge on the principles in international development required in domestic and international terms as well as Southeast Asia in particular.
    • Seek for and manage knowledge according to the current international development situation.

    Bachelor of Education Programme in Teaching Chinese Language

    As Chinese is an important language in the world in economic, political, social and cultural terms, the effective teaching of Chinese depends on the instructors' profound knowledge and understanding of the language itself, of the science of teaching it as a foreign language, and of various aspects of China.

    Objectives:
    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Have knowledge, abilities and skills of teaching Chinese to students in primary school, secondary school, vocational school and to general people who are interested in Chinese.
    • Understand Chinese language and culture and have a continuous self-development.
    • Be a good teacher and have a positive attitude in the teaching career.
    • Have good reactions, critical thinking, sense of problem solving and be able to maintain their good citizenship.
    • Have good career morality and ethics.
    Bachelor of Arts Programme in Thai Language and Culture

    (30,000 Baht per semester; 240,000 Baht per programme)

    Language and culture are an important factor of social harmony. Language serves as the medium to promote and facilitate understanding between people of different cultures. Effective communication in Thai and proper understanding of Thai culture also require an awareness of Thai traditions, customs and ways of life, along with formal practice in Thai communication through various contexts. This programme produces graduates who are well equipped with the best understanding and knowledge of Thai language, culture and traditions, enabling them to communicate professionally and effectively.

    Objectives:
    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Be proficient in Thai listening, speaking, reading and writing, and in properly using Thai for communication.
    • Communicate in Thai for business and technological purposes.
    • Be knowledgeable about Thai culture and popularise Thai culture in broader circles.

    Master of Arts Programme in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

    This programme aims at producing graduates with excellence and expertise in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the ability to appropriately apply academic theories to Chinese teaching and an advanced level of Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing.

    Master of Arts Programme in Chinese – Thai Translation and Interpretation
    (Dual Mae Fah Luang University, Beijing Foreign Studies University Programme)

    (1 Semester at MFU: 130,000 Baht, 4 Semesters at Beijing Foreign Studies University: 259,600 Baht; 389,600 Baht per programme)

    This programme aims to produce graduates who are knowledgeable and skilled in Chinese-Thai translation and interpretation, as well as in applying translation and interpretation theories to occupational pursuits.

    Objectives:
    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:
    • Be professional translators and interpreters with theoretical and practical expertise, skills in translating diplomatic documents, commercial documents and literary work, and the ability to interpret in conferences and negotiations.

    • Be scholars or instructors of translation and interpretation, with the ability to apply relevant theoretical and practical knowledge to conduct research in their own fields.

    • Abide by professional ethics and integrity and to contribute their abilities to the society.

    Master of Public Administration Programme

    This programme aims at producing graduates who possess a well-rounded knowledge of the principles and theories of public administration and other related disciplines, internationally recognised administrative concepts, and the ability to effect a harmonious, righteous and professionally ethical combination of the public sector's and the private sector's practices and methods.

    Objectives:
    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:
    • Possess the potential in public administration, be able to use internationally accepted concepts and be able to analytically apply universally accepted public administration theories to solve local and national problems effectively.

    • Exhibit academic and vocational scholarship in the field of public administration.

    • Conduct modern administration and strategic management, both in the public and private sectors.

    • Be skilled in conducting research and applying research outcomes to develop the country.

    The ultimate goal of the English for Professional Development Programme is to produce scholars with advanced knowledge and skills in English for international communication, a research mind and strong leadership.  We also look forward to creating prospective graduates who are not only well-rounded in current global situations but also able to make adjustments in response to changes. These valuable human resources attributes are needed to propel their local communities, countries, and regions for optimal mutual benefits.

    Objectives:

    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Provide individuals in the English language teaching profession at elementary and higher levels with profound knowledge and understanding of the social, economic, and cultural aspects of English language in the information age, so that international collaborations and professional ethics could be promoted.

    Doctor of Philosophy Programme in English for Professional Development

    Objectives:

    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Provide English language teaching professionals working at elementary or higher levels with advanced  knowledge in English language skills for their profession, skills in teaching English as a foreign language at the international standard, and a foundation for the understanding of social, economic, and cultural aspects of English language so that international collaborations and professional ethics can be promoted.

    • Be equipped with a high level of managerial skills in administering educational organisations or an international curriculum and programme at an elementary level or higher. Apart from developing advanced skills in English, participants who are educational business owners, entrepreneurs in an international education system, or English language schools will be able to manage their organisations in response to the needs of local community, society, and country.

    • Develop research projects that contribute to their professional development and innovative ideas in English language teaching and learning, and to develop English language skills for advanced communication at all levels, namely, regional, national, and international.

    Doctor of Philosophy Programme in Social Sciences

    The principal aim of this doctoral programme in social sciences is to develop academic and vocational scholars excelling in multidisciplinary social sciences, including social sciences principles, concepts and theories, an awareness of the effects of globalisation on various social dimensions, ability to conduct research in social sciences and related disciplines in response to the nation's needs, ability to perform duties in both the public and private sectors, as well as willingness to make ethical, moral and sacrificial contribution to the society.

    Objectives:

    After completing the programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Develop knowledge and ability to apply and adapt social science principles, concepts and theories to the working and solution of problems in keeping with an organisation's internal and external contexts.

    • Be knowledgeable in social science theories, trends in globalisation and conditions that affect the various dimensions of society.

    • Provide academic services in the form of instruction and research, as well as to conduct pro-developmental and pro-organisational research.

    • Be skilled in social science research and the application of research strategies and methodology, which have been acquired through instruction and dissertation writing, to operational and organisational development.

    • Contribute to society in ethical, moral and sacrificial manners.
