SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
From 25 to 26 June 2026, Mae Fah Luang University—by the Scientific and Technological Instruments Center (STIC), in collaboration with the Center for Academic Services—implemented a social academic service workshop titled “The 4th Fairy Mushroom Cultivation Workshop Project” at Ban Mae Khao Tom Luang Community School, Mae Khao Tom Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Rai District, Chiang Rai Province. The expert speaker team was warmly welcomed by Mr. Phitak Chaiyapan, Director of Ban Mae Khao Tom Luang School. Following the welcome, Ms. Sawanee Jannork, Assistant Director of the Scientific and Technological Instruments Center, delivered the remarks to officially open the project. The project was headed by Ms. Dawrueng Kaewduangdee as the Project Leader, alongside a team of specialists who co-transferred knowledge.
The objective of this project was to cultivate and instill modern agricultural knowledge tailored to local livelihoods and self-reliance among youths. It emphasized that "Fairy Mushroom" is an agricultural product with high nutritional value that is easy to cultivate, making it ideal for development into career-oriented school projects and a source of supplementary income during studies. The key highlight of this fourth-year implementation was the integration of "Smart Farm Innovation" as the core of the learning process, offering students hands-on experience with tangible technologies. The activity was attended by a total of 74 students and teachers.
Throughout the duration of the event, the speaker team intensively applied both theoretical and practical learning processes, which consisted of:
-
Basic Mushroom Education: Studying the life cycle, benefits, hazards, and diversity of mushrooms to establish a correct understanding prior to practical execution.
-
Comprehensive Mushroom Cultivation Process: Students engaged in hands-on practice across all stages, including mixing sawdust for filling mushroom bags, bagging, preparing and steaming the bags, and inoculating the fairy mushroom spawn.
-
Smart Farm Mushroom House Construction: Practicing the installation of smart housing systems and technologies, which featured water tanks, single mist-sprayer nozzles, water float valves, and solar-powered LED lights (Solar Cell). This helped apply science to regulate environmental conditions for optimal mushroom growth while effectively conserving energy.
This project promotes the localized integration of science and technology to tangibly improve the quality of life for students and rural communities. It aligns with and directly supports three major dimensions of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
-
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – Since fairy mushrooms possess high levels of vitamin C and other nutritional values, cultivating them for self-consumption within the educational institution helps strengthen students' health and effectively prevents the common cold.
-
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – This serves as vocational skill training and establishes a foundation of self-reliance, allowing students to leverage this knowledge to earn supplementary income during school or develop it into a future career to uplift household economics.
-
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – It encourages communities and schools to adopt safe, chemical-free food consumption practices and maximize the value of natural resources through solar-powered Smart Farm systems.
Mae Fah Luang University sincerely hopes that the knowledge, practical skills, and smart housing innovations delivered to Ban Mae Khao Tom Luang Community School on this occasion will become an essential model for youths and teachers to expand upon, establishing safe food sources and fostering a sustainable community economy in the long run.
