MFU School of Health Science Conducts Proactive Health Education Outreach at Ban Pa Pao-Pa Sang Noi School to Reduce Head Lice Infections and Elevate Quality of Life for Underprivileged Students in Chiang Rai

On 10 July 2026, Mae Fah Luang University, through the School of Health Science in collaboration with the Center for Academic Services, moved forward with its proactive community academic service by organizing an interactive workshop titled “Providing Knowledge and Health Education to Reduce Head Lice Infections among Underprivileged Schoolchildren in Chiang Rai Project.” Held at Ban Pa Pao-Pa Sang Noi School in Mae Kham Sub-district, Mae Chan District, Chiang Rai Province, the initiative was fully funded by the Mae Fah Luang University Foundation for Rural Teacher Development. The project successfully reached its target group of over 200 students ranging from Kindergarten 2 to 3 and Primary 1 to 6.

The event was honored by Mr. Warameth Ounjai, Director of Ban Pa Pao-Pa Sang Noi School, who delivered the welcoming remarks to the university's working group, faculty members, and students. The operation was led by Project Leaders Assistant Professor Dr. Wuttichai Nachaiwieng and Dr. Prapapan Lekngam, who guided the team through hands-on field operations aimed at elevating the personal hygiene standards of ethnic minority groups in the area.

Head lice infestation remains a critical public health concern in schools, as it directly impacts students' physical health, classroom concentration, and daily well-being. This is particularly evident at Ban Pa Pao-Pa Sang Noi School—a rural institution where 95% of the student body belongs to ethnic minority groups, predominantly Akha and Lahu. Data gathered in cooperation with the school teachers revealed that over 60% of female students in kindergarten and primary levels were infected. Being young, these children often lack the necessary skills, knowledge, and awareness regarding personal hygiene, which is further compounded by risk factors such as close physical contact and the shared use of personal belongings.

In response, the project organizing team leveraged their expertise in health education and health promotion to implement highly effective remedies. This initiative aligns with Strategy 4 of the Mae Fah Luang University Development Plan, which focuses on promoting public health. Furthermore, it directly responds to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), specifically SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by prioritizing the quality of life of underprivileged children, easing the financial burdens on families, and enhancing the general well-being of guardians in rural communities.

The day-long field operation featured a structured balance of theoretical learning and practical, hands-on activities, which included:

  • Pre-Learning Evaluation: All students participated in a pre-test assessing their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding head lice to gauge baseline understanding before the sessions commenced.
  • Workshop on “Head Lice and Infection Prevention”: Teachers and students jointly explored the root causes of infestations, proper personal hygiene practices, and correct protocols to prevent the spread of head lice.
  • Screening and Treatment Procedures: The faculty team alongside Master’s degree students conducted individual hair and scalp examinations, followed by safe, public-health-standard procedures to eradicate lice and their eggs.

Mae Fah Luang University sincerely hopes this project creates tangible, lasting transformations within the community. Following the conclusion of the workshop, the working committee will conduct continuous follow-up evaluations through interviews and surveys with the school. This ongoing assessment aims to compare the reduction rates of infestations among students while encouraging school teachers to play an active role in maintaining vigilant surveillance and sustaining high hygiene standards for the children moving forward.
